Did you know that Gujarat is home to one of the largest collection of dinosaur fossils and eggs in the world? Visit the Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park to get a glimpse into the life of this fascinating species.
Gujarat is one of the few states in India which has a huge wealth of fossilized dinosaur remains. Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park in Gandhinagar has the second largest hatchery of dinosaur eggs in the world. It was set up by the Geological Survey of India and is the only dinosaur museum in the country. It is run by Gujarat Ecological and Research Foundation (GEERI).
Piecing together the evidence in Balasinor, researchers now believe that Gujarat is home to one of the largest clutch of dinosaur hatcheries in the world. At least 13 species of dinosaurs lived here, possibly for more than 100 million years until their extinction some 65 million years ago.
The park is spread across 400 hectares. The park has also been called India’s Jurassic park. Several fossilised dinosaur eggs and skeletal parts have been found here. The fossils which were found in Upper Cretaceous formations in the region date back 66 million years ago. The eggs are of different sizes, some the size of cannon balls. The park consists of a zoo, massive skeletons of sea mammals like the blue whale, as well as a vast botanical garden, amphitheatre, interpretation center and camping facilities.
Dinosaurs that are on display consist of Tyrannosaurus rex, Megalosaurus, Titanosaurus, Barapasaurus, Brachiosaurus, Antarctosaurus, Stegosaurus and Iguanodon. The park displays life-size models of the dinosaurs along with details of period in which they existed and characteristics of the animals.
