Minati Mondal, 51, from Kolkata was suffering from crippling stomach pain and acid reflux. She went to a hospital in Kolkata where it was revealed that she had gallstones and doctors recommended a surgical intervention, which will give a permanent solution.
She took some tests along with ultrasounds and doctors found that she was suffering from a severe case of gallstones. Gallstones are small, hard crystalline mass formed abnormally in the gallbladder or bile ducts from bile pigments, cholesterol, and salts that can cause severe pain and blockage of the bile duct.
The doctors found 12,000 stones in her gallbladder which is probably the new world record and not surprisingly, they were all shocked!
Dr Makhan Lala Saha who performed the laparoscopic surgery said, “I was astonished to see the large number of stones that we extracted from the gall bladder of this patient. I had never thought a gall bladder could contain so many stones.”
Dr Saha counted all the tiny stones with the help of several other assistants, which took them four hours to finally conclude that there were 12,000 stones with a size between two mm and five mm.
The doctor has written to the Royal College of Pathologists in London to keep the specimen in the museum.
